broadside poem poster
// typography, graphic design
A poster and postcard design for Poetry International's Cavafy Prize recipient, Sakinah Hofler, of her poem "Grieve" which appeared on Poetry International's 29th issue. Hofler discusses about obstacles African Americans experience within the 21st century due to civil rights issues this group faces throughout history and in today's setting; the poem explains expecting Black American parents having fear of bringing in a new child in today's world due to the racial issues they may face as they grow older. This project incorporates challenges such as typography and image combined to make a visually cohesive broadside poster. I chose to utilize an accordion-like leading with an open space within the middle of the poem as a design choice to expand into this idea of disconnect and brokenness when I thought of "Grieve" to emulate the societal issues Black Americans face that has not fully mended within the country as a whole.
